2024-11-20 Does a home user need a router for added security?
I have read all of your reviews on
the virus software companies. My question is; does a home user need a
router for added security? I have been told by many who use computers
that it's a good idea. The only one who said that I should "take it
back to the store", was a tech support worker at my ISP. Well what is
your opinion?
Thank You, Mr. Ford
To Have or Not to Have... that is the question.

answer the question, should you install a router, we need to address

security related. Then, look if these services and functions are being
supplies elsewhere.

Windows Firewall Exploit Found
Date: 2024-11-09
There are reports of code being posted on the Internet that exploit a weakness in the Microsoft Windows Firewall. Microsoft is claiming they have not seen the actual code and this could be a fluke. I guess we'll only know for sure when the December patches are released. Are you using the Windows firewall? Is it due to it being free, or is it that you actually trust Microsoft to protect your system? While you ponder that question let's examine what this threat exploits.
The code was posted on the Internet Sunday and is aimed to disable the Windows Firewall found running on Windows XP computers. The vulnerability exists in the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. This service is connected to the Windows Firewall functionality and sending a malformed data packet could kill ICS, thus disabling the firewall.
The best way to defend against this new attack is to disable your ICS service running on XP. Of course this will disable any Internet connection sharing you may be using. You could go out and buy an inexpensive Linksys Router to overcome this, or take Alcatraz Security's advice - take computer security seriously and invest in a good trusted security firewall. eEye offers their firewall that includes application protection, for free to personal users. Our review of eEye can be found here.
