2007 Antivirus Review

BitDefender 10 Antivirus Plus

BitDefender 10 Antivirus Plus includes Antivirus, Internet filtering, Antispam & Phishing, and Antispyware. The following review focuses only on the abilty of BitDefenders antivirus and antispyware applicaiton.

Installation:
Bit Defender recommends you uninstall or disable other security products first. You then asked to agree to the license agreement, and choose weather you want to perform a Typical, Custom, or Complete installation. We always appreciate the custom options. You then indicate weather you want a short cut on the desktop and the installation takes off. After the majority of the setup files are copied to your hard drive, BitDefender presents you with the Initial Setup Wizard that helps you register your product, activate your account, scan your system and setup a scanning schedule.

Configuration:
Our version did not automatically updates is virus definition patterns like the setup wizard told us it would. We had to go into the control panel and manually initiate the update. There are two small status windows that run called "File Zone" and "Net Zone" that show BitDefenders activity on your system. They add no value or purpose, and can be shut off in General Settings. By default real-time scanning is turned on.

Resources:
BitDefender 10 Antivirus Plus took only 41mb of hard drive space, and scanned our 6gig drive in seventeen minutes while the bdss.exe process used 99% CPU utiliztion. We identified seven background processes using a total of 14.8mb of system memory.

bdss.exe 2.7mb
xcommsvr.exe 240k
bdlite.exe 8.2mb
bdagent.exe 352k
bdmcon.exe 1.5mb
livesrv.exe 600k
logonui.exe 1.2

Antivirus Ability:

BitDefender 10 Antivirus successfully blocked all ten viruses from infecting our computer.
  Real-TimeFull Scan
 CyberTake Backdoor YesNA
 CryptoC Virus Yes NA
 Ghostdog DoS YesNA

(Real-Time: This is the preferred detection method. The virus was stopped as it entered the computer, before it planted itself onto any media such as the hard drive. Full Scan: The virus planted itself onto the media of the computer such as a folder on the hard drive and was found during a scheduled Full Scan. NA means the Full Scan was not needed.)

Antispyware Ability:
BitDefender did not detect any of the root kits we installed, and allowed all of them to install and download extra content.

Price:
BitDefender 10 Antivirus Plus costs $39.95 for a 2 year subscription, after a $20 mail in rebate.

Support:
Includes FREE phone support, along with web and email support options.

Other Notes:
BitDefender boasts, as they have with previous versions, that the product updates every hour. There are two small status windows that run called "File Zone" and "Net Zone" that show BitDefenders activity on your system. They add no value or purpose, and can be shut off in General Settings.

I started using BD9 Internet Security after reading reviews in Jan 2006. Since installation I have had 3 infections. The BD site and library were useless as was their Tech Support. I solved the problems by using Trend Micro's online scan under safe boot with networking. BD9 either was unable to clean the system or would "encounter a problem and needs to close" when I needed it. I won't renew BD9.
